报告摘要：In this talk, we recall the nature of roots of a real polynomial with degree no more than four, and give the nature of roots of a real polynomial with degree five. We present (simpler) necessary and sufficient conditions for a real polynomial with degree four to be positive, when the variable is positive. At the end, we apply the positivity conditions for quartic polynomials to give a class of new real division algebras.

报告人简介：赵开明，1991年中国科学院系统所博士毕业，先后在美国威斯康辛大学、加拿大滑特鲁大学等多所世界著名大学从事博士后研究，1999年入选中国科学院“百人计划”。现任加拿大罗瑞尔大学教授，兼任中国科学院数学与系统科学研究院研究员、博士生导师，中国科学院“引进国外杰出人才”，《数学进展》、《代数与数论中的发现》、《国际数学与数学科学》等杂志编委，美国《数学评论》、《德国数学文摘》评论员。主要从事李代数、非交换代数、结合代数、可除代数等领域的研究工作。在代数领域国际顶尖学术期刊上发表高水平学术论文120余篇，主持完成3项加拿大研究理事会基金项目、3项中国国家自然科学基金项目，是国际代数学领域有重要影响的专家。
